GOP Straight-Talkers

Eleven Honest Men…

Today, a group of GOP Congressmen met with the president to tell him that those in their respective districts have accepted the idea of a failure in Iraq and that voters want us to leave now even if our departure helps exacerbate a civil war..

Moreover, they told the president that he should give up the hype and the stubbornness because he has no more credibility.

This is tough talk coming from Republicans.

But it is also frank, honest men concerned enough about their careers and voter attitudes that they deemed it better to step forward than to say nothing..

The president, Secretary of State, Secretary of the Army, Press Secretary, Karl Rove and others were in attendance during this 75 minute meeting at the White House.

The president seemed to understand the message coming from his own party and claimed that he did not want to turn this issue over to another president—especially a democratic president.

One might ask whether this will be perceived as a turning point for the War?

What we can project is that if these Congressmen hold to their positions, they could join with the democrats shaping a formidable block that could block attempts at filibustering. Moreover, a block of republicans joining with democrats on the Iraq funding bill could defeat the president’s Surge policy and see our boys and girls return home before the end of 08..

The key will be General Petraeus findigs regarding the progress of the Surge policy. if General Petraeus cannot report positive benefits from the new surge policy, there no longer appears to be a justification for sustaining our current Iraq policy. Or keeping our troops in harm’s way. .

Less than two days ago, informed observers claim that things have gotten worse since the beginning of the Surge.…

It seems that George Bush’s last best argument for maintaining a costly farce may finally be exhausted.
