The Social Contract

Politics Blog Top Sites

most contracts between people involve some give and take and an agreement: You will provide such and such in return for services/cash/barter... It may be as simple as that.
But one of the implied facets of any agreement is trust; that you will live up to the terms of the agreement.

In society, too, there is a contract usually referred to as a compact that ties together the society with its leaders.

In most cases, the social contract has evolved over time but for the most part, usually features the services of the individual in return for safety and protection.

THis has been ongoing from the very beginning of society perhaps some fourteen thousand years ago! (sorry Creationists)

However, like the business contract, the social contract depends on trust; it expects the people to provide whatever services the leadership needs in return for protection. If the leadership fails to live up to its part of the bargain, confidence in that society fails and if it happens on more than one occasion, it is possible that the contract is held null and void, forcing the population to get together and move somewhere else or to chase the Lord out who promised the protections. In the interim, there is the danger of the society collapsing and either chaos or repression resulting.

Our society has failed us over and over again.

Yet we must endure two more years of a government that just might lead us into war again. What are our options?

In civilized society, there is a lack of confidence vote which is true principally of Parliamentarian forms of government. In America, we have only one legitimate tool in our bag of tricks. It's called impeachment.

If a government fails to realize its promises, and the leader's sworn oath to take care of the people and there is evidence that this leader was guilty of crimes and misdemeanors, it is within the purview of the people to remove same prior to an election.

The only missing ingredient seems to be the 'will' to act!
