IRAN: Deux Ex Machina?

Will Iran save the Mid-terms?

Although most people have disputed any connection between world events and national elections, they must now be rethinking their premise.
What we are seeing is a growing correlation between making war or ratcheting up the anti-terrorist rhetoric and the election and support for the president.
This is really hard for an honest American to wrap his mind around but the connections are unassailable. If you recall, things were going badly for the Bush administration prior to 9/11; afterwards, support for the president and the anti-terrorist mood knew no bounds. Next, it was the build-up in the media—and the UN—for an attack on Iraq that came during and up to the election. The government has gained tremendous support by linking the Iraqis to terrorism and the attacks of 9/11. Cynics could not help but recognize that the connection between anti-terrorist hype and voter support were intimately linked.

Now, we are fast approaching the mid-terms again. And now it looks like we are talking about the possibility of a raid on Iran's nuclear capability. Iran, as you recall, was once linked to the Evil Empires that are positioned against the US.

In all of this, we have not heard objective reporting by the media nor heard intelligent feedback from the people; not to mention that our representatives in Congress have been strangely silent on the issue.

What is clearly apparent is that any country adjudged to be a threat to the US has the effect of building support here for action against that government. And that support takes the form of growing support for the government in power. Clearly, the formulae for retaining power is implicit in these successful actions.

What does that tell you?

First, that we are malleable to the power of suggestion. And if that suggestion comes from the top and reinforced, it bears the weight of credibility whether it is justified or not.

We now know that the ruse used to invade Iraq was contrived. That there was no WMD; yet, that fact seems to have slipped from the average voter’s consciousness. Also, note that the dissenting voices in this country have grown few and isolated whereas the erosion of our freedoms continue.

If this government has discovered that "crying wolf" is all that’s needed to stay in power, you can be sure that we will continue to find enemies around the world who are ready to do us in at every turn. If this formulae allows them to stay in power, you can be sure that the propaganda mills will be grinding out the text whether it's real or not. ANd Americans will continue to delude themselves into believing that their president is right come Hell or high water. This is a frightening scenario with no surcease. Witness the fact that 80% of America still believes that somehow Saddam conspired with bin Laden to create the conditions that have led to enhanced power and control over the people.

What do we have to look forward to?

The president has hinted darkly at the future with suggestions that the Army may be permanently sited on domestic sites, that it is okay to spy on people, or withold their rights, or even quarantine them if things get dangerous enough. Although this word was associated with the pandemic that is schedule to massive destruction on our shores according to the White House, it seems like nothing more than stepped up power and control. Will Iran become another Reichstag? Will the American people be fooled into supporting a government that has used fear and enmity to reinforce its grip on power?

Until the American people learn to question the actions of their government, learn to understand the difference between supposition and fact, understand what motivates this government to do the things that it does, we are headed further down the primrose path with no good end in sight. Personally, I'm glad that my own heroes have never had to see what happened to the country they fought so valiantly to protect.
